neat: negative space
Don’t be so negative! (except in the design space where its use is becoming a hot trend). The term “negative space” is actually defined as the empty space that surrounds an object. The use of positive and negative space as a tool in art and design is by no means new, but it's use is becoming increasingly popular. The concept relates to the Gestalt principle "figure-ground," which says that “neither [figure-ground or positive-negative] can be perceived except in relation to the other, and changing one is impossible without changing the other”.Negative space has become so popular in the design world partly because of its minimalistic quality, which can produce interesting, simple and unique designs. It can also be used to add double meanings, like in the design of the Mebourne Food and Wine Festival poster, or it can simply be used to create a cleaner composition, like in the folder used by FaulknerBrowns Architecs. This principle, paired with different techniques like the use of a monochromatic palette, contrasting textures or by just creating clever illustrations is making design, fun and special.
