gelLabs: why we design wearables for kids

July 9, 2014

The most exciting part about the wearable revolution is the fact that the possibilities for where it can take us are endless—much like the mind of a child. Every day there is a new design or technology that allows us to better connect with and understand ourselves and the world around us. Imagine the greatness that can transpire from gaining greater insight into the minds and hearts of our youth… Remember when you were a child? No matter what your idea was, it was never crazy. It stemmed from an innocence laden with an unstoppable, untainted creative flow, and when we thought these thoughts, and dreamed these dreams, we were at our happiest and most innovative. It is with this same innocence and fearlessness that we must approach wearable technology. In a way, we are like children in this new space. Everyday, new developments in technology push the boundaries of our adult limitations, and our minds travel back to that youthful, playful, completely imaginative state. It is not hard to see why kids are our most valuable resource for the coming tech age, so, naturally, we should start this revolution by catering to them—their health, growth, learning, and safety—for understanding them will show us how to understand ourselves in this new and exciting world. They are the ones who will be dealing with the unforeseen consequences. As budding leaders in the wearable space, it is our duty to ensure that we strongly and urgently consider our youth in our ventures and that their connectivity, learning and health are made a top priority in this new wearable technology revolution.Left image: http://www.superchargeyourlife.net/2012/11/07/tiny-superheroes-what-we-can-learn-from-the-kiddos/Right image: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/may/13/google-glass-winky-mike-digiovanni
